Brief Sketch of the Life and Career of the Former Mayor, County Commissioner and Prominent Citizen.
Hon. W. O. Boney passed away at 5:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon, March 20, 1914, at his residence in this city.
We understand the attending physicians pronounced Mr. Boney's malady acute Bright's disease. However, he had not been confined to his home quite two weeks, and his condition became serious only a week ago. Though his illness was for several days excruciatingly painful, his departure was peaceful.
William O. Boney was born Sept. 21, 1857, in Choctaw County, Ala., and came to Texas in November, 1875, and settled near old Port Sullivan on the Brazos, in Milam County, In 1879 he moved to Bell County, and in 1901 came to Bay City where he has resided ever since.
In 1882, Mr. Boney and Miss Florence Carlton were married in Bell County, and she survives him, together with six children; they having lost one child. The surviving children are Mrs. Alvin Williams, Marshall M. Boney, Mrs. Annie Fields, and Carrie and Opal Boney all of this city.
Mr. Boney leaves two brothers, Mr. A. C. Boney of Merkle and Mr. J. A. Boney of Stratford, in the Panhandle, and a sister who resides in Alabama. Mr. A. C. Boney and Mrs. Jas. Nye Ryman, a cousin, were with him when he died; and Mrs. Whitlow, a niece and husband came for the funeral services.
Deceased was a member of First Baptist Church and of the Woodmen of the World in this city, under whose auspices the funeral occurred at 3 o'clock this afternoon.
Mr. Boney was a man of affairs; energetic, enterprising, sagacious and successful in business and always took an interest and played a prominent part in public affairs. Before coming to Bay City he had accumulated quite a competence, and by judicious investments he has steadily added to his fortune. He served as mayor of this city several years and as a member of the commissioners court for a term or two, and managed the public business with the same energy and good judgment bestowed upon his own.
A useful citizen has gone. Light lay the sod above him!
