Clara Maretta Hayes, 82, died Friday, 25 June 1982, at the Hillcrest Haven Convalescent Center in Pocatello, Idaho.

She was born 24 October 1899, in Provo, Utah, to James Barton and Emeline Cole Stratton. She married Ralph Phipps Hayes on 24 April 1917. He died 23 July 1918. Clara never remarried.

After her husband's death, she moved with her small son, Ralph Myrt, to a farm in Aberdeen, Idaho, where she made her home with her brother, Leroy Stratton. Their parents also lived with them until their deaths (1920 and 1925). After her brother's death in 1959, she moved from the farm to live near her son in Aberdeen. She lived in Aberdeen until she moved to the Hillcrest Haven Center.

In 1923, when Clara's only child, Ralph, was 5 years old, her sister, Mary, came to visit the family in Aberdeen. Mary was married to Clive Grant Draper in May 1916 and lived in Pleasant Grove, Utah. She brought her youngest child, Beth, with her for the visit and left the older children in Pleasant Grove with their father.

Mary was upset because her husband, Clive, was having an affair with Arva Lottie Hatt who would many years later become Beth's mother-in-law upon her marriage to Don Hatt. Mary was expecting a baby at the time. On the train trip home, toxemia set in, and Mary died.

LeRoy Stratton traveled to the train station and brought Beth back to Aberdeen. When Clive came to get Beth, Roy met him with a gun and warned him never to return. Beth was raised like a daughter along with Clara's son, Ralph. Beth's life was much better than her siblings who remained with their father.

Clara was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a visiting teacher the many years she lived in Aberdeen.

She was a charter member of the Aberdeen Post 59, American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed braiding rugs, fishing, sports, and dancing.

She is survived by her son, Ralph M Hayes, Aberdeen; a niece, Beth Hatt of Pocatello whom she raised as a daughter; five grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 15 months, three brothers, and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, 29 June 1982, at 1:00 PM in the Aberdeen LDS Second Ward with Bishop Morgan Anderson officiating. Burial was in Aberdeen Cemetery under the direction of Davis Mortuary. Leland H. Sorensen dedicated the grave.
