Sudden Death of M. J. Rosteet
(LC Daily Press - April 24, 1906)

Pioneer Marchand Stricken With Heart Disease In New Orleans

Left Home Yesterday in His Usual Health - Active and Successful Life Brought to a Close.

The many friends and acquaintances of M. J. Rosteet, one of the oldest residents of Lake Charles as well as one of the wealthiest and most prominent, were shocked and surprised this morning to learn of his sudden death in New Orleans last night, for which place he left here yesterday morning at 11 o'clock to attend a meeting.

The sad news was received in this city by Mrs. C. M. Richard, his daughter-in-law, this morning over the telephone, the message being sent by Mr. Rosteet's cousin, Mrs. Warren of New Orleans, at whose home he died. The message simply stated that his death occurred suddenly at her home, and that the physicians pronounced it due to heart trouble.

Immediately upon request of the intelligence of Mr. Rosteet's death his two son, J. H. and J. W. Rosteet, took the train for New Orleans. They will bring his remains back to Lake Charles tomorrow evening, arriving here at 7:30 p.m.

Upon their arrival here the remains will be taken from the train to the Catholic Church, of which he was one of the strongest members, and will there repose until the time of the interment, on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. The casket will be open that those friends who so desire may look their last upon him.

The funeral services will be conducted by Father Cramer, and interment will be made in the Catholic Cemetery here.

M. J. Rosteet is said to have been the oldest merchant of Lake Charles, going into business about 1870, and remaining in the merchant business for about twenty five years....
