A slate headstone marks the grave of "John Littlefield. Esq." The son of Block Islanders Caleb and Mercy (nee Mott) Littlefield, he had held public office on the island until his death at age "70 years, 3 months, & 13 days". When he was in his early 30's, he wed the former Phebe Ray. The marriage took place on Block Island in August 1751, a month before the bride's 18th birthday, and ended with her death a decade later. Among the children born to the couple were daughters Phebe (later Mrs. John Sands), and Catherine, who became the wife of Gen. Nathaniel Greene of American Revolutionary War fame. Mr. Littlefield apparently did not remain a widower, and later wed Sarah Gardiner, this marriage also producing at least one child.
