B.F. Whitaker enlisted 16 Jul 1861 and was mustered the same day as a Private in Co. "B", 10th Kansas Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on 16 Aug 1861 and to First Sergeant on 25 Mar 1862. He was mustered out 19 Aug 1864 at Leavenworth, KS. He lived in Kansas when he applied for a veteran's pension in 1890 but moved on to Bremerton, WA about 1900.

He married twice; first to Mary J. Dodds who died in 1876, by whom he had four daughters and a son and second to Carrie J. Van Kleek by whom he had three daughters.
