A native of Rome, Ga., Mrs. Whitehead was born Jan. 25, 1911, to William Sheldon and Fannie MacDonald Simms. She attended local schools and graduated from Rome High School in 1926 and from Shorter College in 1930 with a degree in French.
As a young woman she frequently came to Athens to visit her sister, the late Mrs. Homer K. Nicholson. She came to Athens again in 1930 to pursue her Master's degree in French from the University of Georgia and attained it in 1931. That year she also met her future husband, Thomas H. Whitehead, a young chemistry professor. The two were married
Dec. 19, 1931. Prior to World War II, Mrs. Whitehead taught French at the University of Georgia, where she was also coordinator of NYA programs and career counseling.
For many years Mrs. Whitehead was active in women's and civic organizations in Athens. She served at various times as president of the Athens Junior Assembly, the Athens YWCO, the Chi Omega Sorority House Corporation and was vice president of the University Women's Association. She served on the board of the United Way, and was a member of First United Methodist Church. She always had a keen interest in newcomers to Athens and tried to involve them in local
organizations.
She is survived by a son, John Simms Whitehead, and his wife, Patricia, of Fairbanks, Alaska, and grandson, Andrew Whitehead; granddaughter, Elizabeth Bunce, and her husband, Dale, of Vista, Calif., and great-granddaughters, Alison Bunce and Lauren Bunce; daughter-in-law, Susan Townley, and her husband, Richard, of New Braunfels, Texas; sister, Mrs. Willard Copeland of Bowdon; and brother-in-law, J. Comer Whitehead, and his wife, Virginia, of Athens; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband,
Thomas Hillyer Whitehead, and a son, Thomas Hillyer Whitehead Jr.
The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Bridges Funeral Home.
