William L. Hostutler was the son of David John Hostutler (1839-1892) and Elizabeth Laflin Hostutler (1834-1885).

He was the grandson of Isaac Hostutler (1817-1864) and Sarah John (1816-1902). (Isaac Hostutler was the brother of Nicholas Hostutler of Ripley County, Indiana.)

He was the great-grandson of Daniel Hostutler (1779-1856) and Rhoda Gibbons Hostutler and of David John (1784-1873) and Elizabeth McCann John (1787-1849), all of Pennsylvania.

He was the great-great-grandson of George John (1754-1841) and Dorothy Wells John (1763-1839).

He was the 3-great-grandson of William John and Margaret Robison John (1721 Wales-1771 Chester County, Pennsylvania).

His 4-great-grandfather Robison fought in the Revolutionary War.

He was the husband of Lida Belle Riggle Hostutler. They were married on September 11, 1886 in Kirwin, Phillips County, Kansas. William and Lida had no children. They raised a foster daughter, Mrs. Birdis Westbrook.
