Arrived in Springfield in 1640, resided there 75 years, until his death in 1715. After the death of the older settlers, including his own father, he became prominent in town affairs. Was for many years Selectman and Town Clerk. He was also a Deacon in the church and appears to have been active in both church and town affairs.

Jonathan's son Henry was also one of the Selectmen, Town Treasurer and also a Deacon in the church. He made the only account of the burning of Springfield found in the Town Records, which was written on a fly leaf of volume three, and is still preserved in that volume.
