John William Johnson
PROVO, March 19 - John William Johnson, 70, ardent sportsman and lifelong
Provo resident, died Friday at his home, 608 E 5th South following a heart attack suffered last Friday. He had been in ill health for about a year.

He was born Jan 22, 1878, in Provo, a son of Niels and Josephine Johnson
Johnson. He received his early education in the Provo city schools. He worked with his father as a construction contractor, building railroad grades and general excavation until 1903.

Employed by the Utah Wholesale Grocery Co., he was for 20 years a warehouseman. He then worked for Sutton's market and still later was employed by the Beesley Monument and Vault Co. of Provo. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was interested in sports, doing much to promote them in his area.

He married Eliza Ann Safford Nov. 27, 1902, in the Salt Lake LDS temple.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Leona) Zabel, San Diego, Cal.;
two grandchildren: three brothers and a sister: J. Edwin Johnson, Lehi, Alfred C. Johnson, Provo; Stephen J. Johnson, Monticello, Cal., and Mrs. Josephine Cohen, Mapleton.

At the time of his death he held the office of high priest. He also served as
president of the elders quorum in the Bonneville ward, chairman of the Bonneville ward building committee, and was active in the ward farm and orchard.

Funeral services will be conduced Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the Bonneville -Tenth LDS ward chapel by Earl B. Craythorn, bishop of the Tenth ward. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the family home Monday prior to services. Burial will be in the Provo city burial park.
