Nellie McKinney, age 85, of Elburn, passed away peacefully Friday morning, June 8, 2001 at the Rosewood Care Center, Elgin, where she had been a resident for several months.
She was born January 1, 1916 in Dekalb, IL, the daughter of Bernard and Cesira (Vellutini) Stefani. Nellie grew up in Dekalb and graduated from high school with the class of 1934. Following high school she studied nursing for a time in Aurora and also worked at her parents confectionery store in Dekalb. It was there that she met her husband, George McKinney. They were united in marriage July 11, 1942 and shortly thereafter, George left his bride to defend the country in WWII. Nellie remained with her parents for three years until George returned and they settled in Iowa. In the years that followed they made their home in Colorado and Texas before returning to Illinois. They settled in Elburn where Nellie became a faithful member of St. Gall Church.
A loving homemaker and later a devoted grandma, Nellie was a rugged survivor in life; something she owed to her "stubborn Italian" heritage. Following her husband's death in 1989 she continued to make her home at the corner of 47 and Kesslinger Rd. until October of 2000 where she suffered a fall. She then made her home with her daughter, Bonnie, for a brief period before becoming a resident at the Rosewood Care Center, Elgin.
Nellie loved cats. Countless lonely strays found their way to her house where they joined sometimes as many as a dozen others, all of whom received a good meal from a kind hand.
She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie (Mike) Ormond of Elburn, IL; one granddaughter, Stacey (Rick) Martinez of Avondale, AZ; one grandson, Steven Morris of Maple Park, IL; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Miguel Martinez; one sister, Lilian McPherson of Dekalb, IL; and two brothers, Rino (Idonna) Stefani of Dekalb, IL and Perry Stefani of Bourbannais, IL.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, George in 1989.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 3-5p.m. at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL where funeral services will begin at 5p.m. The Rev. Richard Paddock of St. Gall Church will officiate and interment will follow Monday morning at St. Gall Cemetery with committal services at 9:30a.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Gall Church, and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119.
