"The Pella (Iowa) Chronicle", Jan. 13, 1944: ANNA CAROLINA LA FORCE
Anna Carolina La Force born September 16, 1871, died at her home in Pasadena, California, the evening of December 3rd, 1943. She was the oldest daughter of Pierre Henri Bousquet and Sara Maria Scholte of Pella, Iowa. Her own mother died when Carolina was about four years old. Her father later married Emma Thompson, a sister of the first pastor of the Second Reformed Church and she as a second mother to Carolina and her sister Marie gave them the love and care that their own mother would have given them, had she lived.
Carolina married Dr. William Brooks La Force of Ottumwa on August 31, 1904,and they lived in Keokuk and Ottumwa for several years. In January of 1918 they went to China, he as a physician on the compound, and both to teach in Taing Hua School for Boys---the Indemnity School started after the Boxer uprising. Their home was open to all. While they could do no religious work in the school, they did a lot in their home and elsewhere. In 1929 they came back to the States and made their home in Pasadena, California.
In July 1936 they went back to China for a year's visit, but due to Mrs. LaForce's ill health they took passage home in the latter part of November. On December 2nd a tidal wave struck their boat and they were both thrown and badly hurt. Dr. La Force died the following day, December 3rd, and Mrs. La Force never fully recovered from her injuries. She, however, remained very active in church and religious work, until about three years ago when her health gradually began to fail.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 5th, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of the First Methodist Church of Pasadena. The services were conducted by the Pastor, Dr. Albert E. Day, assisted by Dr. Scudden and Irving Van Buren Phelan. Mrs. Phelan sang a favorite old Scotch hymn "My Aim Countree". On Monday, December 6th, Mrs. La Force was buried at Riverside, California.
She leaves two sisters, Mrs. George M. Wills of Riverside, California and Mrs. E. Josephine Langerak of Pella. Also two nephews, 1st Lt. Dudok Langerak of Camp Butner, N.C. and Corporal Norman Langerak of Williams Field, Chandler, Arizona.
