John McHoes was born 18 May 1842 in Williams Township, Northampton,
Pennsylvania, to William and Elizabeth (Woodring) McHoes. He was baptized 24
July 1842 at St John's Lutheran Church, Easton, Northampton, Pennsylvania. He
was the 2nd child (first son) in a family of 13 children. In 1849, the family
made the overland journey from Pennsylvania to Illinois by team and wagon,
locating in Stephenson County, Illinois, near Freeport; about 1851 they moved to
Shuey Mills, Wisconsin, remaining there two years; they then returned to
Stephenson County, Illinois, locating near Spring Creek; by 1858 they were on a
farm two miles south near Orangeville, Ill.
John McHoes enlisted in the Union Army as a Private on 13 September 1861 in
Company A, 46th Infantry Regiment, Illinois. He transferred out of Company A,
46th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 16 Nov 1863 and enlisted in the Regiment U.S.
Veteran Reserve Corps.
He married Martha Pile on 4 April 1869 in Stephenson County, Illinois. Their
eldest son, William Seferias McHoes, was born there 13 Jan 1871. They
subsequently moved to California about 1871 to Gridley, Butte Co., California,
where two sons were born: George Elvan McHoes on 13 Sep 1876 and Walter McHoes
on 16 JAN 1880. Their 4th son, Frank McHoes, was born 6 Jun 1884 at Cottonwood,
Shasta County, California. In 1892, John McHoes is listed in the Lake County
Register as a resident of Lower Lake, Lake County, CA.
By 1895, John McHoes was in Washington state where he filed for a military
pension 30 March 1895; in the 1900 census he was living with his sons Walter and
Frank in Elberton, Whitman County, Washington. Subsequently he lived at the
Orting Soldiers Home & Colony. He died in Pierce County, Washington, 3 December
1909.
