John Henry McKenzie was the son of Aaron and Elizabeth McKenzie. He married Milissia Jane Porter on 16 June 1884. They were the parents of four children of whom two survived. A son, George, died in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Emma Keif, died in 1944.

John was survived by his wife, two sons, Sherman McKenzie of McLeansboro, Illinois and Eddie McKenzie of Norris City, Illinois.

John's remains were laid to rest in the IOOF Cemetery of McLeansboro, Illinois.
