In the spring of 1906 Oran remembered seeing refugees arriving by train in Chicago from California following the devastating San Francisco earthquake. After his seeing this he headed to the Bay Area the next year. Perhaps it was because of the 1906-07 business recession. It was in San Francisco that Oran first enlisted in the army in 1907. But because he was only twenty, he had to get his mother's consent. And because the minimum height requirement, was five feet four, he had to stand up very straight when he was measured.
