Barry was the son of Gilbert Koss Sr. and Lorraine Sowa Koss, and the brother of Laurel Koss Obodzinski, Joanne Koss Stanchin, Gilbert Koss Jr. and Linda Koss. He was the uncle of Michele McKinney, David Obodzinski, and Phillip and Adam Stanchin. He was raised in Detroit, where he worked for the Detroit Police Department for many years.
