DEATH OF MRS. MELISSA WILLARD

Born in 1804, Came to Wood County in '8f, Died January 5, '94.

Melissa Peabody Willard, one of the oldest pioneers of Wood county, died at the home of her son-in-law, W.C. Burdick, at West Millgrove, on January 5th, 1894.

Deceased was born at Stonington, Conn., Nov. 20th, 1804; died January 5th, 1894, aged 80 years, 1 month and 9 days. She was married to John G. Willard, April 16th, 1828, at Holland Patent, Oneida county, N.Y. They moved to Ashtabula, Ohio, in 1830, then came to Wood county in 1834 or '35, when the county was almost an unbroken forest, enduring all the hardships of a new country.

She united with the Presbyterian church when quite young, and with her husband was one of the founders of the church in their new home. She was the last charter member of the first church in Millgrove.

Mrs. Willard was the mother of eight children, two of whom are still living --- Mrs. W.C. Burdick, of Millgrove, and Mrs. Helen E. Shaffer, of Nebraska.
