James Sample Madison served in the army of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. He was a Private in Company 1, 21th Regiment of Alabama Infantry, and was a prisoner of war in New Orleans.

His brother, William Gaines Madison, died during the Civil War, so when James came home, he married his brother's widow and helped raise the children. He married Rebecca Barley Madison in Marengo County Alabama. His step-children were : Ada Madison Jackson; Eliza Madison who died young; William Gaines Madison, Jr.; and Ida May Madison. His children were Leila Rusler Madison Gadbury, Augustus Ware 'Bunk' Madison, Addie Madison Conradt, Hettie Madison who died young, James Alexander 'Eck' Madison, and Harvey Hardy Madison.

James Sample Madison and his family came from Alabama to Texas in 1870. They came to southwest Long Cove about 1890. J.S. was a Mason and a Baptist.
