One of fourteen children of Elizabeth Grenville Dedridge (1828-1910) and Hugh Franklin Harryman (1825-1900). His siblings included: Mary J., John Henry, Samuel L., James, William Simkin, Susan, Samantha A., Elizabeth, Louisa, Mattie Harriet, Willis Sherman, Delia, and Thomas Greenville.

In 1880, he was living with his parents and siblings on a farm in Tom Township, Benton County, Missouri. The household, all born in Missouri except his mother, included: Hugh Harryman, age 56, a farmer; Elizabeth, age 52 born in Kentucky; William, age 27; Samantha, age 22; Elizabeth, age 20; Alfred, age 18; Hattie, age 13; Sherman, age 11; Delia, age 9; and Thomas, age 6.

He married Nancy Tolby on February 5, 1884 in Carroll County, Arkansas and had 11 children, including: Clarence, Frank, Mattie, Lee A., Floyd, Hattie, John P., Mable, and George.

By 1900, they were living on a farm in Township 2, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory with their six children.
