Genie Maude Wilson writes on March 28, 1948, "On Thursday morning, the body of Carter Shepherd Baldwin, III, reached Madison for burial in the cemetery here. 'Sonny,' as he was affectionately called, was killed September 14, 1942, during the occupation of Guadalcanal. He was a Marine and very proud of being a good one. He was killed instantly by a shot in the head while he and a companion were searching out Japanese ahead of his company. He was too young and too daring--without enough experience to be cautious--so I have always felt." Taken from "The Ideas of a Plain Country Woman"
