Born May 30, 1916, in Inman, Va., she was a daughter of the late William and Rachel Lyons. Also preceding her in death was her husband of 62 years, Charles E. Cowan Sr., one son, Charles Cowan Jr., six sisters and two brothers.
Emma was a long-time member of the Mt. Olivet Missionary Baptist Church at Braeholm, serving faithfully in many offices of the church. She spent the last seven years living in California with her son and family.
She leaves to cherish her memories one son, Donald (Janet) Cowan of California City, Calif.; one sister, Ann (Robert) Richerson of Akron, Ohio; four granddaughters; many great-grandchildren, a nephew, Hillary Brooks of Amherstdale; other nieces, nephews and extended family and a host of friends.
A memorial service was held Saturday, July 17, at Halley Olsen Murphy in Lancaster.
Local services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at the Cole Street Missionary Baptist Church in Aracoma with Rev. Michael Pollard officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Guyan Gardens at Godby.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to services Saturday at the church
Donations may be made in her name to the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 23, Amherstdale, WV 25607.
