He grew up in Thayer County and received his education while attending rural country school before graduating from the Chester High School in 1914.
Aug. 4, 1918, he joined the United States Army during World War I. At war's end, he returned to Thayer County where he farmed near Byron.
He was united in marriage to Edna Johnson on March 11, 1920. They made their home on the farm near Byron until 1940, when they moved to the Guide Rock community to farm. In 1950, they moved into town where he operated a filling station until his retirement. Mrs. Brumbaugh died Jan. 16, 1967. In June, 1984, he moved to the Veterans Home in Grand Island to live.
He was a member of the Guide Rock American Legion Post.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Edna; one son, Ivan; a daughter, Gladys Smith; five brothers, Leonard, John, Clinton, Eugene and Edward; five sisters, Leota, Gladys, Rubby (sic), Alta Mae and an infant sister; and a son-in-law, Dean Arrants.
Survivors include his daughter, Evelyn Arrants, Lincoln; three sons, Gene of Red Cloud, Glen of Guide Rock and Elmer, Kenesaw; 25 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; one sister, Lola Houdek, Belleville; and many other relatives.
The funeral was Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m., from the First Baptist Church, Guide Rock, with the Rev. Kenneth Doughman officiating. Interment was in the Guide Rock Cemetery with military honors by the Guide Rock American Legion Post. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home, Red Cloud, was in charge of the arrangements.
