DODGE CENTER — It takes something — or someone — special to get Kevin Dierkhissing to say much. He is, to say the least, a man of few words.
The longtime businessman and co-owner of Harold's Club in Dodge Center can't seem to say enough about the woman who applied for a job as a waitress back in 1978.
Her name was Marie Gilbertson, and Dierkhissing and his brother, Mark, hired her to serve drinks at the theater-turned-lounge they own.
She worked at Harold's until July 23, the day she was killed while driving to her Hayfield home after working from noon until 6 p.m. Gilbertson was southbound on Minnesota Highway 56 when her car was struck broadside by a westbound pickup driven by David P. Stanton, 23, also of Hayfield.
Gilbertson died instantly. It was 6:40 p.m. By 8 p.m., word had spread to those who knew her — really, to most of Dodge County.
"I'd worked with her that afternoon," Kevin Dierkhissing said, shaking his head. "It was just a shock to hear what happened. We were all shocked."
Co-workers and customers alike, he said, have struggled with Gilbertson's death. Her visitation, held July 28 in Hayfield, drew more than 600 mourners.
"She was like a mother here," Dierkhissing said. "She really broke my heart. We were all heart-broken. In this kind of business, it's rare to have somebody (work) that long. Marie was so dependable and easy-going. I think heaven must have needed another angel."
Gilbertson was never without a smile, friends and family agree.
"All the cards we got said things like 'We're going to miss her laugh, her smile,'" said daughter Deb Meldahl, of Hayfield.
Her mother, she said, "really listened to you. She cared."
"You just don't meet people like that anymore," said Shari James, of Dodge Center, who sells pull-tabs at Harold's Club.
"She never — in the 13 years that I worked with her, and in the years before that, when she was our waitress — had a bad day," James said. "She was wonderfully kind."
Her death has certainly left a hole, said longtime friend and co-worker, Mary Lou Marquette.
It was Marquette who suggested Gilbertson apply for that waitress job 32 years ago.
