Ethel May was born to Edgar and Minnie (Finlayson) Gray. She had a sister, Celia. When she was twenty years old, she married Howard Hamilton Harbaugh, August 28, 1901 in Leaf River, IL. They had two daughters: Florence Gray (1902) and Lucille Elizabeth (1904). Her husband was a locomotive engineer in Leaf River. They moved to southern California in the 1920's. Florence married George Van Nostrand in 1924, and Lucille married Harold Collin in 1925. Howard worked as a truck driver. They loved travelling about California with their cousins. Sadly, in the summer of 1938, Howard drowned while trying to rescue a distressed swimmer. Ethel would later live with her daughter Lucille. She died in San Diego in 1970.
