The son of John Flanigan and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hanneken, Leo married Dorothy Funk on 16 Nov 1932 in Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of 2 children, and Leo worked at a service station in the early years of their marriage.

He became a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He retired in January of 1974 after 38 years of service.

Leo died 5 days before his 82nd birthday.

He was survived by 1 daughter, Carol Schnelten of Sherman, Illinois; 1 grandchild; and 1 sister, Vernie Franke of Batchtown.

In addition to his mother and father, Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; and 1 son, Ronald Flanigan.

Visitation was held on 19 Aug 1992 at Hanks-Gubser Funeral Home in Hardin. A prayer service took place at 5:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass was conducted at 10 a.m. the following morning at St. Norbert's Catholic Church in Hardin.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to St. John's Hospice or to the American Cancer Society.

Leo was buried next to his wife, Dorothy, who passed away in 1973.
