John was the only son of Jessie F. (Richmond) & Julius Palmer. He had 2 sisters: Laura Richmond and Jessie Fearing. He went through the Providence School system and entered Brown University in 1901, leaving in his junior year. He began his business career with Palmer & Capron, a jewelry manufacturing firm originally started by his grandfather, John Simmons Palmer. The firm was originally called "Palmer & Stave" but was changed to 'Palmer & Capron" in 1852. The firm was succeed by John's (the 2nd), father, Julius Palmer.
The plant was located at 167 Dorrance Street, Prov., RI.
John earned promotions and in 1908 he became partner. He had other business interests as well and was considered to be highly esteemed as a young business man. He was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, Sons of the Revolution, Zeta Psi, Barrington and Bristol Yacht Clubs ( a commadore at the Bristol Yacht Club, 1919). Yachting was his favortie pastime.
He also succeeded his father in his Pilgrim Tercentenary membership in the New England Historic Genealogical Society.
He was a Congregationalist.
He married Abbie Easton Greene of Barrington, RI and had 4 children: Julius, Elizabeth, Frances and Jane Easton.

He is a direct descendent of William Palmer, who along with his family, were passengers on the ship 'Fortune', which followed closely "The Mayflower". The Fortune arrived in Plymouth, MA on Nov. 9, 1621. He is also a descendent of John Alden of the "Mayflower".
