William Lewis settled in Knox County, Illinois in 1829. He is listed on the 1929 Military Roll of Honor for service during the Black Hawk War for Knox County, Illinois with burial in a private cemetery. He first married Sara Davis on 16 September 1823 in Kentucky, by whom he had 4 children: Stephen (born in Kentucky), Wesley and Francis Marion (Pete) and Sarah (all born in Illinois); they all appeared on the 1850 census with their father and step mother (Sara died circa 1838). William Lewis married his second wife, Elizabeth Duval on 2 February 1841 in Knox County, Illinois; they had 10 children: Melvina, Martha, William Jr., Hiram, James, Nancy, Thomas,, Aaron, Benjamin, and Albert.
William was a farmer. He divorced his second wife, Elizabeth, between 1871-1874. He married a third time to Mrs. Susan Randall on 29 May 1875 in Knox County, Illinois. He died after 1880 as he is enumerated with 2 of his sons, Benjamin and Albert, on the 1880 census in Henderson, Knox County, Illinois. The family story is that he died in 1884 or 1887.
