Stephen "Dempsey" Leonard was born on his family farm in Vernon County. Nearby was the McFarland family where his bride-to-be, Nancy Christian McFarland, would become his bride when she was 17. They married July 4, 1880. He died in 1888 at age 31. She later married Charles Leroy Wilson in Washington State. Their first child was named Charles Leonard Wilson and throughout his life was called "Leonard."
