By 1860 his mother had died (apparently just after Minnie's birth) and his father supported the children by working as a carpenter. By 1870 his father, Ephraim, would be cared for at the asylum in Raleigh and apparently remained there until transferred to the new asylum in Morganton after it opened in 1883. He died here in 1895 and is also buried in this cemetery.
James married widow, Eliza Abernathy Gilmore, in 1898 and they are the parents of Kate and Harvey Jay Lineberger.
James was admitted to the asylum in 1906 and was cared for here almost 32 years before his death due to gangrene of the leg (due to arteriosclerosis). His death certificate mistakenly indicates he was hospitalized only briefly. His marker number would be consistent with his date of admission being in 1906.
