Josephus Kearns was born in Brown County, Ohio to Mathew and Mahala (Miller) Kearns. He moved from Ohio with his parents when he was a small boy to Lee County, Iowa then to Putnam County, Missouri in 1863. He was united in marriage to Abgail Jewell on August 10, 1848 in Van Buren, Iowa. To this union 6 children were born: Mary Jane, Annaliza, Smith, James Perry, Mahala and Franklin.
