Only child of Lucy Armenta Lewis and Anderson S. Hartline. Her mother died when Bessie was born or shortly thereafter and Bessie was raised by her father. In 1900, they were living with her grandparents in Rising Fawn, Dade County, Georgia. The household, all born in Georgia, except her grandmother, included: her grandfather, William T. Hartline, age 51; her grandmother, Mary, age 51, born in Alabama; her father, Anderson, age 29; her uncle John, age 20; her aunt Lizzie, age 17; her uncle Frank, age 13; her uncle Noah, age 11; and Bessie, age 6.

In 1910, she married Sam Minor and went to live with him at his aunt and uncle's in Walker, Oklahoma (Garvin County). Their household included: George D. Wade, age 39, married 12 years, born in Tennessee; Dovie, age 27, married 12 years, three living children of seven born, born in Texas; Cordy, age 11; Jessie, age 3; Bennie, age 1; Sam Minor, age 21, married once, less than a year; Bessie, age 16, married once less than a year; and Jack Crawford, age 14, a servant.

In 1920, she and Sam were living on a farm they were renting in Canadian, Oklahoma (Cleveland County). The household included: Sam, age 31; Bessie, age 24, Alma, age 9; Elmer, age 7; and Everett, age 1.

By 1930, her father was living with her and her family on the farm they were renting in Lexington, Oklahoma (Cleveland County). The household included: Sam Minor, age 41, a farmer, born in Texas; Bessie C., age 35, married at age 18, born in Georgia; Elmer E., age 17, born in Oklahoma; Evert D., age 11, born in Arkansas; Mabel I., age 10, born in Oklahoma; Vinnie C., age 7; Ethel B., age 5, born in Oklahoma; Joy F, age 2 6/12, born in Oklahoma; Alice O., age 8/12, born in Oklahoma; and A.
