William Arthur Ganfield, a bachelor of the Meare District parish, Somerset County, England, and Charlotte Andrews, also of Bickwollor Parish, Somerset, were married on October 10, 1826. They were the parents of 11 children, 8 of which survived infancy and came with their parents to the United States sometime after 1850.

In 1856, the Ganfield family homesteaded a farm in Whitewater Township, Dubuque County, Iowa, north of the town of Cascade. Whether all the children came to the farm or not is uncertain. It is thought that daughter Charlotte may have stayed in New York, and that the family resided in Ohio for awhile as son William was married in Ohio May 11, 1853, his first son being born in New York according to the latter's obituary. According to the same obituary (George W.'s), William left Ohio, stayed briefly in Dubuque County, Iowa where he owned land, before moving to Iowa Falls, Iowa, about 1862 when George W. was about eight years old. William Arthur's son Thomas went "west."

Of the original family, William and Charlotte as well as son Arthur are buried in John's Creek Cemetery, formerly a Methodist Church cemetery, a few miles west of the Ganfield homestead. Son Samuel's infant daughter Mary Ellen is also buried there. Samuel and others of his descendants who remained in the vicinity are buried in the Cascade cemetery, with the exception of oldest son Henry, who is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Farley, Iowa.
