Funeral services for James F. DiMatteo, Sr., 51, will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W. Lawrence, Norridge. A Mass will follow at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Hope Church in Rosemont.
Born Jul. 29, 1952, in Chicago, one of three children of Frank and Grace (nee Cozzi) DiMatteo, he died Tuesday, Mar. 2, 2004, at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
Jim grew up on the Northwest side of Chicago and was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church. He graduated from Mozart Elementary School, and Kelvyn Park High School with honors, earning academic, athletic all-conference and leadership awards. He attended Northeastern Illinois University, graduating with bachelor's degree in mathematics. He then co-owned the family business, DiMatteo Bros. Auto Supply, for 22 years before merging with Carquest. He raised two wonderful children with his wife of 28 years, Carole. He spent his free time with his family and friends, enjoying every aspect of life including coaching little league baseball, supporting his daughter Chrissie through many years of softball, graduating college and becoming a teacher and softball coach herself, as well as seeing his son, James "Jimmy" Jr. enjoy many years of baseball and basketball and seeing him off to Eastern Illinois University. He spent many days playing golf with many of his best friends and alumni of Northeastern Illinois University. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a strong, compassionate, determined and endearing gem.
He was the beloved husband of Carole (nee St. John); loving father of James Jr. and Christen; son of Grace and the late Frank DiMatteo; brother of Ralph (Lisa) DiMatteo and Rocky (Paulette) DiMatteo; and uncle of many nieces, nephews. He was also loved by many aunts, uncle, cousins and friends. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, at the funeral home.
