Jean White Vance was born about 1746 in Culpeper, Virginia. Little is known of her background, but clues from old historical records report she was "the grandaughter of James White who came from England with Lord Fairfax. Her father, also James White, named Sulphur Springs, Virginia and built the first hotel there (From Old and New Westmoreland). These facts have not been verified.

Another yet unsubstantiated version of her family of origin comes from the letters of William G. Vance written around 1932 and published in "Notes on Vance Family and Allied Names" by Alice V. Robinson. He states:

"...I have here in Morristown the warrant issued to Robert Vance for 4000 acres of land in Ohio for Revolutionary service signed by Andrew Jackson as President. [Robert Vance] was dead, died 1819 at Pittsburgh, but the President wrote my great grandmother Jean White and in it refers to Robert as "my cousin". This Jean White was great great granddaughter of Perigrine White, the baby born on the Mayflower."

Jean married Robert Vance on March 20, 1775, who later became a Captain in the Continental Army. They were reportedly the parents of David, Samuel, Sarah, Elizabeth, Joseph, Jane, Robert, John, William, and Andrew.

Jean was described as "a woman of exceptional attainments and took her part in all the hardships incident to pioneer life, and stood by her husband all through; she was a famous beauty in her youth, and an accomplished horsewoman." (Genealogical and Personal History of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, Volume 2" pg 598)

The family must have suffered great privations owing to Robert Vance's service in the Colonial Army during the Revolution. They lived for thirty-two years in the same neighborhood at Vancefort, now Corapolis, Pennsylvania until Robert's death in 1819. She died in May of 1834.

Old and New Westmoreland, Volume 3, 1918 by John Newton Boucher states:
"Jean White Vance died in 1834 and is buried at Three Springs Cemetery, Hollidays Cove, Hancock county, West Virginia..."

Researchers are invited to send any discoveries about Jean's family origins.
