He was inducted into the United States Racing Hall of Fame as part of the 1955 inaugural class.

He was the son of John S. Burch and Lucy Waddell Burch.
Per the 1900 Census for Washington, District of Columbia, he married Emily J. Cammer in 1880.
They were the parents of four children.

William Preston Burch Handled Thoroughbred Horses Many Years
Saratoga Springs, New York, July 9. William Preston Burch, 80, veteran trainer, known wherever thoroughbred horses are bred and raced, died in a private sanitarium here last night after a brief illness. He came here a few weeks ago with the horses in the racing stable of Rear Admiral Grayson and Samuel Rose, prepared to supervise their training for the August race meeting. Burch was a scout and courier in the Confederate Army in the Civil War.
