From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Tuesday, February 14, 2006:

William "Bill" Howell, 97, retired owner of Howell Feed Store in Handley, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, in Fort Worth.

Memorial service: 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Greenwood Garden Chapel. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park.

Memorials: Contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Bill was born Aug. 31, 1908, in Fort Worth to I. B. and Lottie Snyder Howell. Bill graduated from Handley High School. He attended John Tarleton College and later worked at Armour & Co. In 1924, his family moved from the south side to Handley, where his father, I. B. Howell, started selling feed from a wagon until he built a feed store on East Lancaster. Bill met Lorene Roth from Iowa while working in California. He and Lorene were married Sept. 9, 1941, and resided in Handley, where he soon partnered with his father in the feed business. He was most proud of his recognition for 75 years of service he received from the mayor of Fort Worth proclaiming Aug. 21, 1999, as the Handley Feed Store Day.

Bill and Lorene were married 55 years and enjoyed working together and serving their patrons while making lifelong friends. Bill and his family were members of Handley United Methodist Church. He and his wife delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorene Howell; and sister, Gwen Howell.

Survivors: Son, W. F. Howell Jr. and wife, Diane; daughter, Mollie Gillespie and husband, Cliff; grandchildren, Greg Gillespie and wife, Melissa, Kelley Schillo and husband, Kevin, Stacey Blind and husband, Brian, and Becky Smith and husband, Travis; and great-grandchildren, Taylor Smith, Peyton and Lauren Blind, Greg Alan and Mary Ann Gillespie and Lance Schillo.

From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Wednesday, February 15, 2006:

Well into retirement, William Francis "Bill" Howell Sr., would sit on the front porch of the feed store his daddy opened in 1924, watching the traffic and visiting with former customers.

"He was just real down-to-earth," said Jim Taber, who owns what was originally Howell Hay, Grain & Feed. "He could tell me stories about how people would go by in their wagons."

Mr. Howell died last week at 97 after spending most of his life in the family business.

"He was still driving at 95," said Mr. Howell's daughter, Mollie Gillespie. "He'd go to John Carter's, the grocery store and the bank."

The little store on 6472 E. Lancaster Ave. now carries a different name — Handley Feed Store — but it's still a lot like it was when Mr. Howell's children worked at the corrugated metal building after school with their dad.

"The first thing I remember is going on deliveries," Gillespie said. "My home away from home was the feed store. I grew up playing with the feed sacks."

It was a good place for a feed store: The land nearby was dotted with hayfields and dairy farms in the days before builders expanded the suburbs and excavated Lake Arlington.

Mr. Howell also liked to play the ponies at the old Arlington Downs racetrack.

A domino fan, Mr. Howell also relished fishing and playing cards. He didn't give up bridge until his arthritis prevented him from holding the cards, Gillespie said.

Although he grew up in the area, graduated from Handley High and returned to run the feed store, Mr. Howell met his wife, the former Lorene Roth, in California. They were married for 55 years.

Mr. Howell's son, William Howell Jr., sold the business several years ago but said he isn't surprised that it has survived into the era of big-box stores. Perhaps part of the reason is that the good will Mr. Howell built lives on.

Besides Mr. Howell's son and daughter, survivors include grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial services for William Francis "Bill" Howell Sr. will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Garden Chapel, 3100 White Settlement Road. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Park.
