Nelson and Jennette House came to Buffalo, New York by canal and then by steamboat to Detroit. They took a wagon to Pontiac where they left their things and started out for Brighton on foot. Mrs. House got a ride on the way by horseback with a stranger.
Nelson W. House took up land in Section 2 from the government. It cost him $1.25 per acre for 160 acres. He built a log house in which they lived. The farm was located about 6 or 7 miles NE of Brighton, Livingston County, Michigan, 1/2 mile south of Ross' corners. [Sources: Florence (Wenk) Barrett 8/25/1974 and The House Genealogy Book].
