Hon. L. E. Donnally, who represented Perry County for two terms in the Pennsylvania Legislature and was one of the county's most prominent citizens, died at his home in Donnally's Mills at 4.45 o'clock on Saturday morning. He had been in poor health for nearly three years past, his illness dating from a severe attack of the influenza, which left him in an anemic condition. On four different occasions he was taken to Harrisburg hospital for treatment and several times was thought to be at the point of death, but each time he rallied and about a year ago his health began to improve and great hopes of his ultimate recovery were entertained. His last serious illness dated only from Wednesday of last week and therefore his death came as a great shock to his devoted family and many friends. He was aged 61 years and nine days.

Lewis E. Donnally was a son of the late William L. and Martha J. (Yohn) Donnally and was born at Donnally's Mills, June 8, 1861. As a boy he attended public school, graduating from the Millerstown high school and then became a student of the Bloomfield Academy, from which he graduated with honors. On the completion of his schooling he became associated with his father in the milling and farming business at Donnally's Mills and at his father's death succeeded to the business.

Mr. Donnelly was a worthy descendent of one of the prominent old families of the county, the village of Donnally's Mills taking its name from the mill operated by his ancestors. In the business, social, political and religious activities of the county, he took an active part. A man of handsome appearance and pleasing personality, combined with becoming dignity, and polished, courteous manners, it was not hard to understand the reason for his popularity. He was a constant member of the Methodist Church and prominent in church and Sunday school work.

Early in life, he began to take an active interest in politics and soon came to be recognized as one of the leading Democrats of the county. In 1910 he became the candidate of his party for Member of Assembly and was elected over H. Cheston Frank, of Newport, by a majority of 437, and in 1912 was re-elected over E. E. Marshall, of Newport, by a majority of 306. His record in the Legislature was marked by intelligent, conscientious fidelity to the best interests of the people, and his good judgment and sound common sense were so well recognized that his advice and counsel were sought and followed by many of his colleagues.

By his death this County loses one of its foremost citizens, and his wife and children are bereft of a most kind and indulgent husband and father.

He was a member of the P. O. S. of A., Donnally's Mills; the K. G. E., of Millerstown, and the I. O. O. F., of Newport.

Mr. Donnally was married October 21, 1884, to Miss Carrie E.Howanstine, of Newport, who survives with one son, W. Linn Donnally, of Harrisburg, and one daughter, Ruth E., (Mrs. G. Earl Long) of Steelton. He is also survived by three sisters--Bessie (Mrs. O. K. Hutchinson), of Altoona; Carrie (Mrs. Amos Clemson) of Sunbury, and Margaret (Mrs. J. J. Jones) of Donnally's Mills.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the late home of the deceased and was very largely attended, people being present from every part of Perry County and many from adjoining counties. The great number in attendance clearly attested to the respect and esteem in which Mr. Donnally was held. The services were conducted by Rev. Berkheimer, of Dillsburg, assisted by Rev. McMorris of Millerstown, and burial was made in the Newport cemetery, the services at the grave being in charge of the P. O. S. of A., with the president of that order, Mr. G. H. Super, officiating.

The pallbearers were, T. J. Kreamer, J. A. Nickel, J. L. Inhoff, F. J. Kerr, A. M. Lesh and Lewis Gingerich.
