William was admitted to the U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on October 16, 1919 and died there on December 11, 1920. He was buried in the cemetery on Fort Leavenworth as they were unable to contact his family. This appears to be due to the name and address of nearest relative being Lizzie A, Crane, wife, of Souix City, Iowa. (Lizzie died prior to William's being admitted). William's body was removed and shipped to Garnett, Kansas on January 27, 1921 to his son Charles Crane.
