Lee served in the US Marine Corp, where he was wounded on Guam Island during World War II. He lost both an arm and leg to mortar fire. After he got out of the hospital, Lee lived the rest of his life with his brother Bob and his family . Bob and Lee started an equipment rental business, Suburban Equipment Rentals, in Cypress, Orange County, California in 1953. Although he never married, Lee was like a brother to Bob's sons, Rex and Bobby, and like a grandpa to their children. Lee liked to fish and hunt and had a large selection of photos he had taken over the years.
