Z L Walcher Fatally Hurt At War Plant

Zenas Leory Walcher, 57, 813 South Jackson Street, an employee of the Western Cartridge factory at Alton, died Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at St Joseph's hospital in Alton, from injuries suffered Friday night when struck by a switch engine at the plant.

Mr Walcher, a pipe-filler assistant at the factory, traveled from Litchfield to Alton daily by bus. He was to report for the midnight shift. He had alighted from the bus but a short distance from the plant and was walking when he stepped in front of the moving engine. Both legs were severed, one at the hip , the other below the knee. He remained conscious until an hour before his death and relatives said he made plans for his funeral services.

Mr Walcher was born in Irving, April 13, 1885, a son of Luther and Elizabeth Walcher. He farmed in the Irving community until 15 years ago when he moved to Oklahoma. Four years ago he returned to Irving and a year ago moved his family to Litchfield. He had been employed by the Cartridge plant for the last two months. He was united in marriage with Miss Ola Ezell in Oklahoma, 14 April 1906. She died a number of years ago. He married Mrs Etta Taylor Painter of St Charles, Mo, April 15,1940 She survives.

Seven children of the first marriage survive him: Mrs Ula Baird of Dumas, Tex.; James Walcher of Amarillo, Tex,; Mrs Ida Roselius of Panhandle, Tex.; Mrs Elva Borden, Amarillo, Tex,; Leroy and Jack Walcher in foreign service with the U S Army; and Miss Esther Walcher of Wichita, Kans.

He also leaves four brothers and two sisters; Albert Walcher of Irving; Elmer Walcher of Arlington, Wash.; Omar (Homer) Walcher, Blackwell, Okla; Ray Walcher of Moore, Okla.; Mrs Ruth Martin of Alspaugh, Colo.; and Mrs Nora Cannon, Corcoran, Calif. Five stepchildren, Mrs Marie Jett of Hillsboro; Mrs Genevieve Traylor; Mrs Eva Horn; Mrs Margaret Fraley, all of Litchfield; and George Taylor of Edwardsville.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Christian Church in Irving. Rev C H Walter will be in charge and interment will be in St John's Cemetery near Irving. The body will be brought from the Bass Funeral Home in Hillsboro to the residence, Tuesday evening.
