Chester Douglas Brechner


Chester Douglas Brechner, 83, residing in Granger, formerly of Lakeville, passed away at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend from natural causes. Mr. Brechner was born on December 29, 1923 in Gary, IN to the late Edward and Joan (Fleming) Brechner. He has lived most of his life in Lakeville and South Bend. On July 5, 1946 in Warsaw, he married the former Edith Mae Singer who preceded in death on March 7, 1995. Four sisters and six brothers, Doris, Madeline, Ruby, Leona, Carl, Glen, Gerald, Fred, Ralph, and Elmer, have all preceded in death.


Mr. Brechner is survived by; one daughter, Ella Rose (John) Goebel of South Bend; one son, Dan Douglas (Susan) Brechner of Granger; four grandchildren, Tanya Marie Acito, Stephenie Renee Bemis, Amy Rose Goebel, and Adam Carl Goebel; two great grandchildren, Ian and Maria; one sister, Betty Overhulser of South Bend; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.


Mr. Brechner retired from Bendix Corporation after 33 years. He was also a self-employed auto mechanic, security guard at the former Briteway, and a cab driver. Mr. Brechner served his country with the United States Army during WWII and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He was a member of the American Legion in Lakeville and North Liberty.


Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 8, 2007 at the Lakeville United Methodist Church. Rev. Larry Dimick, pastor, will officiate. Military graveside services and burial will follow at Porter Rae Cemetery, North Liberty. Friends may visit with the family from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, January 7th at the Palmer Funeral Home, Lakeville and one hour prior to services in the church on Monday.


In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Chester D. Brechner may be donated to the Milton House, 922 E. Colfax Avenue, South Bend, IN 46617.
