Early pioneer and leader of North Alabama. Settled in Limestone County by 1817; member of first state constitutional convention and first state legislature in 1819; state senator, 1820-1828, and president of the state senate for five sessions; two-time Whig gubernatorial candidate, in 1831 and 1847; narrowly defeated by Clement Comer Clay for U.S. Congress in 1829. Of him, Willis Brewer writes in Alabama, Her History, Resources, War Record, and Public Men: "He was fluent and eloquent as an orator, with a large fund of practical knowledge. He was exceedingly candid and hospitable and swayed opinions of men as much by his large-heartedness as by his strong magnetism. He was a patron of the turf, and carried out in his Alabama home all the other attributes of a Virginia gentleman of the approved school." He served as a U.S. marshal in Virginia, and a captain in the War of 1812.
