STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Lifelong Staten Island resident Angelo Barisciano, 82, a retired firefighter and longshoreman, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay, following a long battle with lung cancer.
Born and raised in New Brighton, he graduated from McKee High School in 1946 and then served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in Japan until 1947. Upon returning home, he lived in Eltingville and later in Willowbrook.
He began his career as a city firefighter for Ladder Co. 20 in Manhattan and was one of many firefighters that responded to the infamous 23rd Street fire in 1966. This incident was recorded as the largest loss of life in the FDNY's history until Sept. 11, 2001.
After 11 years, Mr. Barisciano was reassigned to Ladder Co. 78, New Brighton. During his career as a firefighter he was cited for saving a drowning 10-year-old boy and for responding to a Stapelton fire, both while off-duty. He retired in 1978.
He also worked for 46 years as a longshoreman, and retired in 1990.
Mr. Barisciano played guard and tackle for the Granito-Smith semi-pro football team during the mid-1940s. In his leisure time, he enjoyed cooking and spending time with family. He often cooked for his fellow firemen. He also loved to vacation with family in Atlantic City.
The funeral will be tomorrow from the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville, with a mass at 11 a.m. in Holy Child R.C. Church, Eltingville. Arrangements include cremation.
