He also received the: Army Good Conduct Medal; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star; Wold War II Victory Medal; Combat Infantryman Badge

Fred D. Wall) enlisted in the Navy sometime between 24 December 1941 and 29 December 1941. He attended basic training at San Diego , California in January 1942 and was posted to the USS Gridley (DD-380) in February 1942. He immediately shipped out to the South Pacific and within 8 months of enlisting he was both a shellback (Crossed the Equator on ship) and a blue nose (Crossed the Artic Circle on ship). He was reassigned to the USS McCalla (DD-488) in early October 1942. He remained with the USS McCalla until she returned to the United States ( Mare Island , California ) in December 1943. Dad went on leave to Oklahoma and married Mom on the 28 December 1943. On 1 January 1944 he was back in California and was reassigned to the USS Ommaney Bay (CVE-79). Dad was not happy about being assigned to an Aircraft Carrier and missed movement when the ship sailed. (During time of war, missing movement is a capital offense) He was hoping to be reassigned to a destroyer. He was court-martialed, docked 7 days pay and 6-months seniority in grade (Petty Officer 2nd Class) and reassigned to the USS Whiteplains (CVE-66). The ship left port at the end of January 1944. He was still with the USS Whiteplains in December 1945 when he was discharged. (The USS Ommaney Bay was sunk by Kamikaze on 6 January 1945) During his four years of service in the Pacific, he earned 9 battle stars for his Asian-Pacific Campaign Medal. (Battle Stars were granted for surface to surface ship actions).
