Lester Harlan Burkert was born in Valley Falls, KS on August 21, 1919. He graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1937 and attended Kansas State College School of Veterinary Medicine from which he graduated in 1943. He served as an officer in the US Army during WW2.

His parents were Leland A. (Lee) and Dauphine F. (Dot) Burkert of Valley Falls.


Lester practiced Veterinary Medicine in Nebraska City, NE after the war. He then worked for the USDA as a Veterinary meat inspector until retirement in 1980. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen (Lambert) Burkert who passed away in 1975. He is survived by two children, Mrs. Mary (Burkert) Warren of Cary, NC and Lt. Col Michael Burkert of Burlington, KS.

He died in Lawrence on July 16, 1993Services for Lester H. Burkert, D.V.M., 73, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rumsey Funeral Home in Lawrence. His remains were cremated.

Dr. Burkert died Friday, July 16, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 21, 1919, at Valley Falls, the son of Leland and Daphene Foster Burkert.

He graduated from the Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine and worked for 30 years for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He retired in 1980 in Des Moines, Iowa. He moved to Lawrence in 1982.

He also was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was married to Jean M. Finney. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include an aunt, Wilverine Greenfield, Lawrence.
