Carl B. Alwood, 78, 147 E. North St., Carlisle, died Monday at Carlisle Hospital.
Mr. Alwood was born Jan. 28, 1896, in Glen Rock, a son of the late John and Emma Heist Alwood.
He was a retired employe of the U.S. Post Office and was a veteran of World War I. A member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, he was also a member of the American Legion Post 101; VFW Post 477; Eagles Lodge, Carlisle; Red Men Lodge, Hanover; Cumberland Fire Co.; Charles Fitzpatrick Barracks, World War I Veterans. In 1918 he graduated from the Business Administration School, YMCA, New York City.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Rutters Alwood; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Helena) Stringfellow, 11 Channel Drive, Carlisle, and Mrs. Francis (Betty) Murphy, 931 S. 31st. St., Camp Hill; one son, William J. Alwood, 161 E. North St., Carlisle; three brothers, Paul Alwood, York, Joseph and Harold Alwood, both of Hanover; two sisters, Mrs. Hilda Grazier, Baltimore, and Mrs. Monroe (Lillian) Warner, Hanover; six grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Patrick's Catholic Shrine Church, E. Pomfret St., Carlisle. Rev. Joseph F. Braubitz, his pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday evening at the G. Book Roth Funeral Home, Walnut Bottom Road, at Belvedere Street, Carlisle, where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
