PHILLIP RHODES OBITUARY

WAR CIVIL WAR VETERAN – DIED AT AGE OF 84 YERS 10 MONTHS AND 9 DAYS

Was a Civil War Veteran – Having Lived Here Several Years Ago

Phillip P. Rhodes, whose death was mentioned in the columns of the Sun the past week, was born in Mapleton, Ohio, Oct. 3, 1845, and at the time of his passing was aged 84 years, 10 months and 9 days.

He enlisted as a private in Co. H 60th Regiment, Ohio Infantry on March 21, 1864 and received an honorable discharge July 28, 1865.

He came to Labette county, Kansas in the spring of 1870 and took a claim 5 miles southwest of Edna. Later he located near Howard, Elk county, Kansas and for many years was engaged in farming and stock raising.

He was united in marriage to Miss Jennie M. Graham, formerly of near Edna on Sept. 28, 1880 at Howard, Kansas and had lived a peaceful quiet life for almost fifty years when the companionship was broken. Mr. Rhodes served Elk county as a commissioner for a term of two years.

He grew up in the Presbyterian faith and became a member of the First Presbyterian church of Howarad in the 1923, remaining faithful to the end.

Coming to the prairies of Kansas in an early day, Mr. Rhodes knew something of the hardships and privations of the life of a pioneer. His sterling qualities as a man won for him many friends. He had been in failing health for several months and had recently gone to Wichita for special treatment. Everything was done for him that loving hands and willing hearts could do, but he has answered the last great summons and gone to his eternal rest.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his good wife, Jennie M. Rhodes, one son, A.R. Rhodes, numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral was held from the Lakey & Martin Mortuary, Wichita, on Wednesday, Aug. 13, conducted by the Rev. Fenness of the Presbyterian church. Interment in Park cemetery at Wichita.
