Jack Robert Thompson was the father of writer Hunter S. Thompson. His second wife was Virginia Ray Davison Thompson, to whom he was married from November 2, 1935 until his death. They had two other sons, Davison Wheeler (1940-) and James Garnet (1949-1993).

An insurance adjustor, Thompson died of myasthenia gravis. He was a World War I veteran.
