Rev. Lewis L. Greenlee

Yesterday's Corydon Times: Rev. Lewis L. Greenlee died at his home in this city last Saturday morning in his eighty-seventh year. He had no disease, but it was simply the breaking down of a worn out system, hastened by a severe cold contracted about three weeks ago.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist church Sunday at one o'clock. At the special request of the deceased, the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. F.A. Clemons of Seymour, with whom he had been an intimate associate for many years. The service was in charge of the pastor of the church, and Rev. H.P. Dudley also participated.

Rev. Greenlee was born in Monroe county, Virginia, August 24, 1821. He came to Wayne county, Iowa in 1856. April 1, 1856, he was married to Hannah M. Ferrell. To this marriage was born fifteen children, thirteen of whom are still living, nine sons and four daughters.

He converted and united with the church in boyhood. He was ordained to the work of the gospel ministry in the Harmony Baptist church, Monroe county, Virginia, March 13, 1853 at the age of thirty-two years. The most of his ministerial services were rendered in Wayne county, Iowa, where at different times he served as pastor of the Baptist churches at Cambria, Peoria, Confidence and Highland and did missionary work throughout a much wider district.

He had lived in Corydon for about six years. His wife died about two years ago, and the remains of both now lie side by side in the Corydon cemetery with their resting place marked by a beautiful granite monument. But their souls have gone to that great and blessed reward which God in His revealed word has promised to all the faithful.
