This is Deputy Sheriff Willie Pickett Giddens of Worth County, GA
Willie was shot with a shotgun and killed in the line of duty on the night of Dec 28, 1920 near Doles in Worth County.
Ironically he was shot by a man called Mace Giddens, an African American man who evidently thought they were intruders he claimed.
Willie, Sheriff John Sumner and another Deputy served the warrant that night and Willie just happened to be the first man to enter the dwelling.
Mace Giddens escaped and Willie died Tragically leaving a wife and small children.
The story made headlines across the entire nation.
Mace fled to Indiana and was later apprehended but the state refused to extradite him to Georgia for concerns that he would be tortured.
Many politicians were involved and it was a very well known story.
Eventually a deputy and Willie's brother went up and were allowed to bring Mace back to Worth County
He was sentenced to hang but over the course of 3 trials he ended up receiving prison time instead.
Was quite a story.
I posted a file on it as well as lots of news articles etc if anyone is interested just type "Willie Pickett Giddens" in the search bar of the group or ask me how to view it.
Rest in peace Willie, my cousin. — with Gordon Poole Sr. and 2 others. (Posted on Facebook, by Gregg W. Giddens
